Rick's 1976 Harley Davidson Sportster

Rick's 1976 Harley Davidson Sportster

!976 ironhead Sportster rubber mount softail Ebay bike. '92 Tripoli frame, 35 degrees rake, 2000 fat boy swing arm, '83 sportster front-end, '70 sporty front wheel, SS dual disc brakes, 84 custom 3 piece all welded Sun drag race wheel on rear, 160 tire, custom spokes by Buchanan, my own hub, axle, spacers, adjusters, etc. Jesse James rear fender mounted like a ridged, stock FX front fender lowered, Sportster fat bob tank, drag bars with pan head throttle and grips, my own tach mount with windshield mount built in. The seat grab is from a stock Sportster from the late 60's and the seat is just something from Ebay. The engine started out as a '76 bought off of Ebay. I sawed off the transmission and welded plates on in place of it and machined it flat and square (the first one ended up being dinner for my Cincinnati mill, this one is the second attempt). Then I had to make my own output shaft, bore out the left case for larger bearings, make a support for the longer shaft so I could mount a belt drive pulley on the end of it. I run a 3" open belt with my own motor to transmission plate and starter nose. Now the transmission is a '2000 B twin cam 5 speed with chain secondary drive hooked to a Tolle sprocket brake.

Back to the engine. It's got S&S wheels, rods and pistons to give it 77 inches, XR 750 valves, Manely springs with Titanium keepers, Jim s big axle lifters, Andrews V9 cams, Crane HI 4 ignition, and a Dellorto 40mm dual throat side draft carburetor. After the seats were opened up for the larger valves I didn't dare take a die grinder to them any more and screw up the new valve seats so the heads are sort of ported. The header is something someone had laying around in their basement for a couple of decades (Ebay brand new) and it worked out well. Oil tank is stock softail, headlight and mirrors are '99 Sportster black, forward controls are just something off of J&Ps clearance table. Everything is powder coated, anodized or wrinkle finished except the orange things. Most of this bike really is Ebay and a few things from here and there.

I made a lot of the parts too. Like I said the complete rear hub, axle etc, the license plate/ chain guard, swing arm bolts, tail lights, motor plate, starter nose, sprocket shaft and support, front motor mount, kick stand (1 5/16 wrench welded to a stock softail pin), lower triple tree, front turn signals, plugs in the front fork tubes, the brake line to the dual disc runs through the SS steering neck, black tubes to hide the chrome between the triple trees and many more things.

I built this bike to show up the big twin boys and to let them know that a Sportster engine is really a thing of beauty and fits nicely in a BT frame and this one's no slouch either. I have been trying to root out the critters (bugs) from my custom build and have almost got them whipped. Of course you never know what will turn up next when Murphy gets involved.
