Doug's 1972 Harley Davidson Sportster

Doug's 1972 Harley Davidson Sportster

I've owned the bike since 1994. I bought it for $1500 with a seized motor. It turned out the crank pin nut came off and half the flywheel was history. I didn't know much about Harleys and took it to the wrong guy. This person really did a half-ass job, although he did manage to locate a flywheel half.

The bike is a 1972 Sportster, but has 1973 heads and cylinders. 1972 was a bastard year. It was the first year for 1000cc and the 1972 cylinders and heads only fit 1972 models. Whereas 1973 heads and cylinders fits a lot of different years. It has a 1974-1977 front end, and after re-building a Bendix carb 2 or 3 times, I finally went to an S&S. As a result of my bad judgment as far as mechanics go, the bike is now down for another rebuild (Top and bottom).

I have big plans (=big money!). S&S bottom end, headwork, cams, 21" wheel up front (19" now), painting, chroming, the works. The bike has not been treated right, as far as previous owners go and it deserves better. Besides, I have come too far to turn back now. (Translate that as "I've already got way more money in it than it will ever be worth"!)
